ITER is an international nuclear fusion research and engineering megaproject that will be the world's largest magnetic confinement plasma physics experiment. It is an attempt to replicate the fusion processes of the sun to create energy on earth by using an experimental tokamak nuclear fusion reactor that is being built next to the Cadarache facility in the South of France. The primary goal of ITER is to demonstrate the scientific and technological feasibility of safe, clean, and unlimited fusion energy for peaceful use. ITER will also test new technologies such as tritium breeding in a real fusion environment and its results are intended to bolster the global nuclear fusion industry. The name 'ITER' stands for International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor but the project also uses the Latin definition of the word ‘iter’, meaning ‘the way’ or ‘the path’.
